Bomb

by Natalka Blok

DIRECTED BY LIANNA MAKUCH

produced by Pyretic Productions

“Helmed by one of the rising stars of directing in Canada, Edmonton’s own Lianna Makuch, Bomb moves with speed and precision and a kind of professional polish...”

— Liane Faulder, Edmonton Journal

Dasha has a bomb inside of her that can save the world. But all she wants is a moment of rest…

Bomb is a surreal, dark comedy about Dasha, a Ukrainian activist whose brain won’t shut up. The year is 2017. Dasha is trying to save the world, fix her relationship, and get her therapist to stop asking questions she doesn’t want to answer. It’s not going well.

Her thoughts are spiraling, her reality is bending, and every conversation feels like a small explosion. As the pressure builds, Dasha starts to unravel…

Bomb is fast, funny, darkly absurd, and a little bit tragic. It’s about burnout, big emotions, and staying sane when the world feels like it’s blowing up.

Dora Award winning director Lianna Makuch helms the Canadian premiere of Bomb by Ukrainian playwright Natalia Blok, featuring a star-studded cast (Geoffrey Simon Brown, Mariya Khomutova, Anna Kuman, and James MacDonald). Explosively funny and razor sharp, Bomb is a dark absurdist comedy that detonates with wit and strikes deep.

“…a clean, crisp production with strong and supple performances by its four characters… Helmed by one of the rising stars of directing in Canada, Edmonton’s own Lianna Makuch (fresh off a Stratford gig), Bomb moves with speed and precision and the kind of professional polish that’s not necessarily common at Fringe shows.”

- Liane Faulder, Edmonton Journal

“Even from the title sequence, one could feel the material density of Ukraine’s history constrict the stage from all sides. This is the first remarkable feat that Bomb achieved – it distilled the texture and weight of an invasion across all four dimensions of the stage… everything works quite well in this production, largely because of the seamless directing vision from Lianna Makuch. The play is obviously a labour of love, and I encourage any theatre-goer to cross their fingers and watch to see if the play gets held over. The festival run is, understandably, sold out.”

- Daniel Greenways, Edmonton Scene

“There’s a visceral absurdity about this clever, very dark multi-loaded stinger of a comedy that Pyretic Productions (well-named for its inflammatory proclivities), brings to the Fringe. And it’s detonated by a cast with major fire-power in the crackling production directed by Lianna Makuch.”

- Liz Nicholls, 12th Night

Award-winning Ukrainian playwright Natalia Blok's dark comedy Bomb is being performed at this year's Fringe Festival, and reviews for the play have been explosive so far. Actors James MacDonald and Mariya Khomutova joined Radio Active in studio to talk about the play.
